Unable to break the door, they climbed on the temple and vandalised its glasses and floor, they said.

Minority groups blame politicians for attacks

Noakhali Bashkhali hindu house temple idols destroyed burned by muslim fanatic
Noakhali Bashkhali hindu house temple idols destroyed burned by muslim fanatic

Leaders of religious minority groups on Sunday sought commitment from political leaders for their security in the wake of recent nationwide attacks on houses and temples of Hindus.

The leaders said they feared such attacks would run through to next elections.

Five were killed, at least 47 temples and 1,500 houses belonging to Hindus were vandalised or set on fire during the recent attacks in 37 districts, according to Bangladesh Puja Udjapon Parishad.

Statistics have come from a monitoring cell installed in Dhaka’s Dhakeswari National Temple on Mar 1, the Parishad’s chief Kajal Debnath has told bdnews24.com.

But Hindu-Bouddha-Christiain Oikya Parishad said the extent of damages would be far more.

Ninety-nine temples were attacked, 48 of them were looted, vandalised and burned down, the organisation’s General Secretary Rana Dasgupta told bdnews24.com. “Almost 2,000 minorities’ houses were burned down.”

He feared such attacks would continue.

“Let this not be part of nasty politics. The way top politicians are speaking, it seems they are instigating conflict,” he said.

“BNP and Jamaat said they did not carry out the attacks, Ershad is also denying. Awami League says there’s no question of their involvement. Then who did it?”

Dasgupta said they all wanted to see that political leaders were with them. “They can prove by their deeds that they are politicians, not criminals.”

“They can do politics, but it should be clear that we are not guinea pigs,” he said.

Dasgupta cited Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics figures that Hindu and Christian and other minorities’ population in Bangladesh came down to 9.7 percent in 2012 from the 21 percent in 1971 and 19.7 percent in 1947.

“The main reason for attacking minorities’ houses and temples is to take away their property. The culture began in 1947,” he said.

He feared that if the current trend continued, the number of minorities would come down to one percent of the population over the next 10 years.

Puja Udjapon Parishad chief Devnath said they did not want any special favour for the minorities. “We only want that our name be not the cause of our trouble.”
Islami miscreants vandalised a Saraswati idol at a temple beside the residence of ruling-party Member of Parliament (MP) Mohammad Atiur Rahman Atique in Sherpur city’s Madhabpur.

“If this was to be the end, then it would have been peaceful. But this is not the end. More war crimes verdicts will come. Such acts are being done with a target before and after the elections.”

He called upon the government, administration and political parties to be aware of the attacks.
Bangladesh Puja Udjapon Parishad Joint General Secretary Nirmal Kumar Chatterjee said they would file a report prepared by the monitoring cell findings to authorities and foreign agencies soon.

Government assistance to the victims was not satisfactory, he said.

Bangladesh Hindu-Buddha-Christian Oikya Parishad Presidium Member Subrata Chowdhury recalled the making of Bangladesh and later history to claim that those governments were ‘always involved in suppressing the minorities’.

“We don’t want to believe Awami League is involved in the 2013 attacks. But, they have failed to ensure justice. Local authorities have also failed to take necessary actions,” he said.

Paul demanded punishment for the perpetrators.

He, however, did not blame anyone specifically for the sabotage.

“Whoever is responsible… they will be identified and arrested,” said Sherpur Sadar Police Station Officer in-Charge Mazharul Karim.

He visited the temple on Saturday morning.

Suspected Jamaat-e-Islami activists had been carrying out vandalism and attacks on the Hindus in several areas of Bangladesh over the issue of trial of war criminals.

A sin for 'em to live here?

Hindus in Noakhali, Banskhali look for answer after attack by Jamaat
Having lost everything, Nipu Sheel wails sitting on the debris of her house that was set ablaze by Jamaat-Shibir men at Banshkhali in Chittagong

Photo: Anurup Kanti DasStar Report

The Hindu families having survived the onslaught from anti-liberation elements now wonder what protection they have in this country.

As the religious minorities in some remote pockets of Chittagong and Noakhali try to come to terms with Thursday's barbaric attacks on their homesteads and temples, there is no let-up in the assaults at other places including Barisal, Bagerhat and Gazipur.

Bangladesh Hindu-Buddha-Christian Oikya Parishad has demanded the government act immediately to resist communal attacks, arrest the culprits, rehabilitate the victims and rebuild the temples.

Moments after Jamaat leader Delawar Hossain Sayedee received death sentence for war crimes, his party, in some cases allegedly aided by BNP supporters, struck terror in the hearts of Hindus on Thursday.

Visiting some neighbourhoods ravaged by Jamaat and its student wing Shibir, these correspondents encountered blank looks of the community members.

Passing three days under the open sky, without sleep and proper food, the families in Rajganj under Begumganj upazila of Noakhali do not know what lies ahead.

“It is our sin to live in this country being Hindu; it is our sin not to flee away,” Minoti Rani Das shouted. “We had a happy family. Now I have no shed, no food, no space to cook, no furniture. Now I have only some ashes.”

This is not only Minoti's story. Around seventy six families have been living under inhumane conditions since Thursday afternoon as the bigots ran riot after the pronouncement of Sayedee verdict.

While millions of compatriots across the country were celebrating following the verdict, some families were losing everything in the village.

Almost all the victims and some other villagers alleged that Jamaat-Shibir-BNP men were directly involved in the attacks.

At least 40 houses, six temples and several dozen shops were burnt and vandalised; valuables and furniture were looted. Police came at least one and half hours latter when it was all over.

While launching attacks, around 250 to 300 rioters were saying Sayedee was sentenced to death because of the deposition of Hindu witnesses, locals said. The number of attackers varied from spot to spot.

“Sayedee got death sentence because of you. You cannot stay in this country,” Bablu Bhuiyan, whose two houses were damaged, quoted one attacker as saying.

Gathered since around 10:00am, the fanatics were chanting slogans including Sayedee saheber kicchu hole, jolbe agun ghore ghore (fire will be set to each and every house, if something happens to Sayedee). Many were wearing masks.

Abdul Hashem, a tea-stall owner of Rajganj Bazaar, said almost all the attackers were young and he could identify at least three persons actively involved with Jamaat. Two of them run a pharmacy and a grocery at the bazaar.

Many Hindu families took shelter in nearby houses of Muslims during the attacks, said Benu Ranjan Chowdhury, whose house was burnt.

Some victims alleged that Harunur Rashid, chairman of Rajganj union parishad and general secretary of local BNP unit, played a murky role.

“Had the chairman taken immediate steps, the mayhem wouldn't have occurred in such massive scale,” said Bimol Kanti Acharjee.

However, Rashid refuted the allegations, saying, “The attack was launched by some outsiders and street urchins.”

Mohammad Alauddin, acting ameer of Noakhali district Jamaat, said, “The fans of Sayedee might have resorted to violence. Besides, a feud over land could have triggered the incidents. I've heard there was rivalry among some families.”

He denied Jamaat's complicity.

Mahbubur Rashid, Noakhali superintendent of police, said, “It is clear to us that the anti-liberation force launched the attack. Maximum punishment for perpetrators will be ensured.”

Like Rajganj, Chittagong's Banshkhali also bears marks of vandalism and arson led by Jamaat and Shibir on Thursday.

The attackers hacked to death 60-year-old Dayal Hari, said locals.

Dayal had come to see his daughter at her in-law's. As the armed bigots started the rampage, he hid at the latrine.

But they broke the door, dragged him out and hacked him. The man somehow escaped and jumped in the adjacent pond but the attackers caught him and hacked him again.

Dayal was rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital where physicians declared him dead.

Sunil, another Banshkhali resident, said some one thousand attackers stormed the houses. They carried machete, sticks and other sharp weapons and used gunpowder to burn eight houses.

At least 70 people are now homeless.

Nipu Sheel did not understand why her house and cowshed were burnt to ashes on Thursday.

“They beat us and set our houses ablaze,” she said. ”We didn't understand what's was wrong. They looted our belongings. The cattle were burnt to death. We were lucky enough to have our kids saved.”

Rani Dash is one of many injured in the assaults; she suffered right arm fractures.

Sheikh Fakhruddin Chowdhury, mayor of Banshkhali Municipality, local BNP-Jamaat leaders instigated the mayhem.

In Bagerhat, some criminals set fire to Dumuria Sarbojanin Puja Mandir in Ramchandrapur union in Morelganj upazila around 1:00am yesterday.

The house of Narayan Chandra Bashu Chowdhury, president of Banagram union AL, was set afire around the same time, police said. Another house of a Hindu family was torched in Baharbula village.

Local administration imposed the section 144 banning all sorts of gathering and agitation at Failahat Bazar from 9:00am to 6:00pm yesterday as both local AL and Jamaat called programme at the spot around 2:00pm.

Unidentified people damaged eight idols of Sarbojanin Durga Mandir at Gaurnadi upazila in Barisal and idol of Saraswati at a temple near Kashimpur Bazar in Gazipur yesterday.

In Gaibandha, police arrested three Shibir activists yesterday in connection with anarchy over the last two days at Sundarganj upazila.

The Jamaat-Shibir rioters in Thursday and Friday destroyed 19 shops, six houses and two temples at Belka, Dhupni and Bangsher bazaar of the district.

The administration has deployed two platoons of BGB and one platoon reserve force of police and imposed the section 144 to avert any untoward incident.

Lashing a déjà vu of 1971, Jamaat-Shibir fanatics yesterday wrecked havoc on the Hindu community across the country.

They damaged at least six temples, including one of Buddhists, and torched houses and business establishments of Hindu people in Noakhali, Gaibandha, Chittagong, Rangpur, Sylhet, Chapainawabganj and elsewhere in the country.

In Rajganj of Noakhali, Jamaat-Shibir men set ablaze a temple and eight houses of the Hindu community.

They also traded bullets with law enforcers in Datterhat under Sadar Police Station and in Rajganj under Begumganj Police Station, leaving two people killed. The deceased were identified as Khokon, 17, a pickup van assistant, and Liton (28), a fish monger, reports our Noakhali correspondent.

The Jamaat-Shibir men also looted a jewellery shop owned by one Biplob Sarkar at Chandraganj Purbo Bazar in Begumganj.

Witnesses and police said hours after top Jamaat leaders Delawar Hossain Sayedee had been sentenced to death, the marauding activists equipped with firearms, iron rods and kerosene set fire to Harishiva temple in Rajganj market area at 3:30pm.

"They returned an hour later. This time we were left with no choice but to flee the area, as they started torching our houses with kerosene," schoolteacher Shankar Chandra, who lost his house in the attack, told The Daily Star over the phone.

Some 50 Hindu people used to live in the houses burnt down, he said, adding that all but a few people had managed to escape to safety. Those left behind had been beaten up and kicked out of their houses by the Jamaat-Shibir attackers.

"We ran for our lives leaving everything behind. I was only seven during the Liberation War in 1971, but it didn't feel this insecure even then," said Shankar Chandra.

During the attack, the Jamaat-Shibir men also threatened newsmen to keep from covering the incident and took away cameras of photojournalists. They also forcefully picked up television crew Mohtasim Billah Sabuj. Locals later rescued Sabuj and took him to safety.

Assistant Police Superintendent (ASP) of Begumganj circle Mahbub Alam told The Daily Star that informed of the arson, police and firefighters had reached Rajganj around 5:00pm. Police had a hard time containing the violence in the area, as Jamaat-Shibir men had outnumbered the law enforcers.

When police tried to bring the situation under control, an exchange of gunshots between the attackers and law enforcers took place. Fish monger Liton died in the incident, said the ASP.

Almost at the same time, another group of Jamaat-Shibir men clashed and traded gunfire with police at Datterhat area leaving Khokon bullet-hit. He was declared dead when taken to Sadar hospital.

Two people had been critically wounded in the attack, said the inspector, adding that the injured had been undergoing treatment at upazila health complex.

Jamaat-Shibir men also set ablaze three shops belonging to Hindu people at Kaliaish union of Satkania upazila, said Additional Superintendent (South) Md Iltutmish of Chittagong Metropolitan Police.
